Miss Behave
The Magic Tube
Bart will show you how to make a tube that seems empty, but you can still pull things out of it. Now that's magic! You will need:
  • An empty plastic bottle
  • A paper or plastic cup
  • Black paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Coloured paper
  • Three or four coloured scarves or hankerchiefs
Before you start the trick you need to make your magic tube:
  1. Cut off both ends of the plastic bottle so that it becomes a tube (ask an adult to help you).
  2. Take your paper / plastic cup and cut off about 5mm from the bottom.
  3. Position the cup upside down inside the tube just below the tube's rim. You may need to trim the top of the cup if it is too wide.
  4. Paint the inside of both the tube and the cup black, then leave them to dry.
  5. Put glue on the outside rim of the cup and position it back inside the tube - make sure it sticks firmly.
  6. Decorate the outside of the tube with coloured paper shapes, paint and glitter.
Now let's get to the trick. Before your audience arrives tie up the coloured scarves or hankerchiefs together. Wind them round the top end of the tube, tucking them into the gap between the edge of the cup and the tube so that they cannot be seen from the outside. You are now ready for your trick!
  1. Very carefully pull out one end of the coloured scarf or hankerchief and hide it beneath your thumb.
  2. Pick up the tube and show the "empty" tube to the audience.
  3. Wave your wand over the tube and say a few magic words.
  4. Now pull out the scarves / hankerchiefs dramatically by transferring the tube to your other hand while still holding onto the fabric that was hidden under your thumb.
Your audience will be speechless!
